Using IRCle
Chat Lingo ::: IRC Commands ::: Nicknames ::: Using mIRC ::: Using IRCle
Step One - Downloading
First download and install IRCle onto your computer. You can find IRCle (30-day free trial) at the following website: http://www.ircle.com/download.shtml - just choose your specific Mac operating system (Classic 68K, PowerPC or the current OSX) and go! Oh, and there IS a trick to getting around the 30-day free trial limitation... :)
Step Two - Setting up IRCle
Start up IRCle. Since you've never used the program before, you'll first need to set up your Preferences before going any further. Go to the WINDOWS menu, and scroll down to the CONNECTIONS option. A box will appear with 10 preset fields. Highlight field #1. Then, click on the EDIT button to enter your nickname/username and real name (if you want) into the applicable fields.
Step Three - Setting up server
Next, click on the SERVER: SELECT button at the top of the same box. If you scroll through the different servers (in alphabetical order), you will see many different EsperNet servers from which to choose. Choose any one, then press SELECT. Please note that servers can sometimes go down, and if you seem to have a problem connecting immediately, just choose another server on the EsperNet network.
Step Four - Finishing Touches
Go back to the WINDOWS menu, and scroll down to the CONSOLE option. You'll need to have this main window open in order to see if your connection is successful, etc. You won't chat in this window, though, as it's mainly for network information, updates and PING reports (which show if there is any lag between yours and other servers on EsperNet).
Step Five - Finalizing
Once you have the above options saved, you're ready to connect! You can do so either by going back to the WINDOWS menu and scrolling down to CONNECTIONS (and hit the Connect button), OR by typing /join irc.esper.net in the dialog box that you see at the very bottom of your screen. You're almost there!
Step Six - Chatting
The EsperNet server is host to thousands of different channels. The easiest way to get to our chat is to type /join #spankyschat in the dialog box at the bottom of your screen. You should then have another new window pop open called '#spankyschat'. If you see this, you've made it. Congrats! Adjust your font, colour and any other pre-sets at your discretion; you'll learn as you go along, guaranteed. :)
